The beginning part 1

The beginning

My first year of undergraduate studies set exceptionally high standards for the rest of my medical school journey. After finally securing admission to my medical College, I began to see a glimmer of hope for achieving my dreams and aspirations.

My first year of MBBS started on a promising note. As part of the inaugural deemed batch of 2019, our curriculum underwent significant changes. Our foundation course, which lasted a month, introduced us to the hidden curriculum, covering essential skills like ethics, communication, and the roles and responsibilities of a doctor.

I vividly recall the enthusiasm and eagerness I felt as I embarked on my dream course. The subsequent months were a whirlwind of intense learning, with back-to-back classes that initially overwhelmed me. However, I adapted to it.

Next came the labs and anatomy dissection, which presented a new set of challenges. Having never seen a dead person before, I was apprehensive about my reaction. This feeling of trepidation is one that many MBBS students can relate to.

The day of the cadaveric oath was a poignant moment. All students stood in silence before the cadavers, trying to come to terms with their presence. It was a moment of reflection, one that reminded us of the significance of our profession and the responsibility that comes with it.As I stood before the cadaver for the first time, I felt a mix of emotions. But as I began to dissect, I realized that it wasn't as intimidating as I had imagined. Initially, it felt weird, but soon it became a normal part of my learning experience. The pungent odor of formalin lingered long after I left the lab, a constant reminder of the new world I had entered.

The first term exams brought a welcome surprise when our physiology professor announced the top performers. I secured third place in my class with a score of 73%, just shy of the distinction score of 75%. This achievement made me realize that scoring 80% or above in this field would be a remarkable feat.

Just as I was settling into my new routine, news of the novel coronavirus began to spread. The world was on the cusp of a pandemic, and my life was about to change in ways I never could have imagined.
